Goin’ Home

Little boy with a fishin’ pole runnin’ down the lane-
His knobby knees showin’ through the holes in his faded jeans.
With messed-up hair, his feet were bare.
     When I asked him,’
“Where you goin’? Where you been?”
With a dirty face and a bashful grin
Said, “Tm goin’ home. Goin’ home.”

Now he’s a young soldier sittin’ on his bunk
     Re-reading his letters from home.
And starin’ at a picture of his little baby girl he barely knows.
He’s been dreamin’ of his daughter and his lovely wife
That he longs to hold.
     He can hardly believe
What his captain told him,
     “Son, you’re goin’ home.”

You’re goin’ HOME.
     Flying halfway around the world..
Goin’ HOME.
     You’ll see your wife and your little girl;
Your tour of duty is done,
And you have served your country well.
That’s why I’m proud to tell you,
     “You’re goin’ home.”

Now he’s an old man; his whole family gathers round his hospital bed
He didn’t have much time–that’s what the doctor said.
He held his little wife’s hand.
For what would be the very last time,
And with a labored breath, here’s what he said:
     “I’m goin’ Home.”

It’s been said that a long, long journey starts with just one step.
And all the steps we travel make our life.
So when we take our final step,
You know, it’s really not the end..
Our new life will begin-
     When we get Home.

I’m goin HOME.
     It’s just around the bend,
I’m goin’ HOME,
My life’s comin’ to an end.

You see the Son is coming down,
And He will carry me away.
And that’s why I just can’t stay;
     I’m going HOME.
Goin’ Home.
     I’m goin’ HOME.
