More Than Me

© 2006 by Dennis L. Harrison

My dad went into town to clear up some of his old debts;
Instead, he went to Joe’s and drank up all of his paycheck.
He was gonna take Mom dancing, but Mom said, “Don’t you see?
He loves ol’ Jim Beam more than me.
More than me, more than me,
He loves ol’ Jimmy more than me.?”

My dad said he would pick me up at twelve oclock sharp;
But the clock says its four-thirty; maybe his pickup wouldn’t start.
He was gonna take me fishing, but Mom says, “Don’t you see?
He loves Jack Daniels more than me.
More than me, more than me,
He loves Jack Daniels more than me.?”

“Hello, is this Joe down at Joe’s Bar and Grill?
Would you please let Jack and Jim
Know that their best friend’s still in jail?”
We were gonna watch a movie,
Now Mom’s trying to make his bail.
She tells all you fellers to go to Hell.

“It’s too late for my family,
But maybe not for yours-
Put that bottle down
And get your butt back home.
You have a wife that really loves you,
And kids that love you too.
Who needs friends like Jack, Jim or Joe?”

It’s been thirty years or so since that day I called ol Joe.
Since then Dad’s lost his wife and kids
And became an old wine-o;
He was gonna quit his drinkin’,
But he has no self-control
With friends like Ernest and Julio.

More than me, more than me,
He loves his drinkin’ more than me.

More than me, more than me,
He loves his Mickey more than me…
He loves his drinkin’ more than me.
Yes, he loves his liquor more than me.
